The Connell Brothers Company was formed by two brothers when they set sail to Hong Kong to solve a customer's problem. They later expanded to the Philippines (and Japan and China). The copnay imported well known goods such as Carnation condensed milk. In 1931 the compnay became a subsidary of Wilbur-Elis company but retained its name.  Following World War II operations resumed with the compnay providing canned goods, construction materials, heavy equipment, industrial chemicals, plastics, pharamceuticals, textiles and a wealth of other products. In 2019 the company rebranded to a new name "Connell" and still operates in the Philippines.

The Aboitiz & Company (ACO) was founded by Paulino Aboitiz in the late 1800s as an abaca trading and general merchandise business in Ormoc, Leyte and later ventured into inter-island shipping to transport its goods across the Visayas. It was formally incorporated in 1920. The company has since expanded their business to include maritime transport, industry and machinery, power generation and distribution, real estate, marketing, and manufacturing and serves as the private holding company of the Aboitiz family today.

The Colegio de San Carlos traces it's  roots back to 1783 when the Bishop Mateo de Arevalo initiated the opening of the Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos in Cebu. In 1924, San Carlos split into two under a Vatican decree that seminaries should only be for priestly training and the the Colegio de San Carlos moved to P. Del Rosario St. During the Second World War led to the interuption of courses in 1941 as several buildings were damage but was reopened over the course of 1945 and 1946. In 1948 the college was granted University status and was renamed University of San Carlos. Today it is a private Catholic research university adminisrtered by the Society of the Divine World missionaries.
