Federico Abaya led the 'Cry of Candon' and declared the free Republic of Candon more than three months ahead of the Philippine Independence.
Federico Abaya was born to an affluent family in Candon, Ilocos Sur and was a member of the Espiritu de Candon, a revolutionary group founded in the same region.
On 25 March 1898, Abaya led the 'Cry of Candon' which drove the Spaniards away and allowed him to declare a free Republic of Candon more than three months ahead of the Philippine Independence in June 1898.
He joined the Philippine Revolutionary Army and at the onset of the Filipino-American War he led the Battle of Caloocan in February 1899. Later, he became a commander of forces of a guerrilla movement in southern Ilocos.
Abaya died as a prisoner of War in the hands of the Americans.
