Gregorio Aglipay was a former Roman Catholic priest who became the first head of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente in 1902 - an independant Christain Church.
Agliplay was known for inciting patriotic rebellion among the Filipino clergy during the Philippine Revolution. DUring the Revolution Aguinaldoappointed Aglipay to the post of Militaty Vicar general of the revlutionaries.
During the Philippine-American War he joined the revolution andwithdrew to Ilocos Norte to organise an armed resistance. In 1899 he was ex-communicated by the then Manila Archbishop. Aglipay was one of the last generals to surrender to the Americans.
Following the end of the war in 1902 Isabelo de los Reyess was working towards the formation of a nationalist church independant of Rome and suggested Aglipay be its head. Agliplay who was still a devout Catholic eventually accepted de los Reyes' offer. Aglipay held the position of Supreme Bishop until his death.
Agliplay later joined Freemasonry. He ran for election in 1935 as the President of the Commonwealth Party but lost to Manuel Quezon.
