Fred Castro was the Chief Justice of the Philippines from 1976 until his death in April 1979
Castro was behind the creation of the Supreme Court Reports Annotated, which is currently the voluminous source of decisions of the Supreme Court used by practitioners and law students.
Castro, (together with Justice Querube Makalintal) was one of the 'swing votes' in the Ratification Cases which upheld the 1973 Constitution, and paved the way for extending Marcos' regime. Castro approved of the Martial Law years, and this is reflected in his decisions, opinions and public statements.
Issued on 67th Birth Anniversary #1551, 2 Sept 1981
