Carlos "Botong" Francisco was an artist who was awarded the title National Artist of the Philippines (Visual Arts) posthumously in 1973
Francisco was one of the first Filipino modernists along with Galo Ocampo and Victorio Edades who broke away from Fernando Amorsolo's romanticism of Philippine scenes.
He was a practioner of mural painting and revived this form of painting in the Philippines. His best works include Blood Compact, First Mass at Limasawa, The Martyrdom of Rizal, Bayanihan, Magpupukot, Fiesta, Bayanihan sa Bukid, Sandugo, Portrait of Purita, The Invasion of Limahong, Serenade, Batong, and Muslim Betrothal. His major masterpiece is the mural he did for the Bulwagang Katipunan of the Manila City Hall.
Fransciso worked as a scriptwriter for films such as Genghis Khan, Putol na Kampilan, and Tatlong Labuyo. In addition, he designed costumes for films such as Romeo at Julieta, Prinsipe Tenoso, Ibong Adarna, Siete Infantes de Lara, and the Juan Tamad series.
