Maria Guazon was the first woman doctor of the Philippines. She was an outstanding socio-civic leader and the founder of several women's organizations

MARIA GUAZON      

In 1912, Guazon became the first woman to graduate from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. After graduation, she served in the Philippine General Hospital as resident physician in Medicine and Pediatrics.

 

In 1914, she was appointed Dean of Women of the College of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry. In 1916, she was made Director of Women for the entire university.

 

As president of the Women's Medical Association of the Philippines, she organized the UP Red Cross. She became the president of the National League of Women and organized civic conferences for young women and factory girls.

 

Upon her retirement from UP, she founded and became the managing editor of Women's World magazine. She was active in her journalistic work until 1937
