Following the end of  World War II Lopez rebuilt the family business, and entered the emerging broadcast industry.

In 1962, he led the group of Filipino investors that acquired Manila Electric Company or Meralco, then the largest corporate entity in the country.

The growth of the Lopez empire continued until the declaration of martial law in 1972. The family’s print and broadcast companies were forcibly shut down by the government, and their interest in Meralco and its subsidiaries was forcibly sold .
