In 1967, Malik, together
with the Foreign Ministers of Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Singapore
would officially form ASEAN in a bid to form a united front in the face of
Communist expansion in Vietnam. Malik insisted that ASEAN should only be about
economic, not military cooperation.
In 1971, Malik was
chosen as President of the United Nations General Assembly.
