NICOMEDES JOAQUIN

Nick Joaquin was a writer, historian and journalist, best known for his short stories and novels. He was awarded the Philippine National Artist for Literature in 1976.
He is possibly considered the most important Filipino writer in the English language.
Joaquin joined the Philippines Free Press, starting as a proofreader. He attracted notice for his poems, stories and plays, as well as his journalism under the pen name Quijano de Manila. His journalism was both intellectual and provocative, an unknown genre in the Philippines at that time, and he raised the level of reportage in the country.
Joaquin admired Jose Rizal and paid tribute to him in a number of his books.

A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino: An Elegy in Three Scenes is a play written in English in 1950. It was Joaquin’s most popular play and probably the best-known Filipino play. Set in the Filipino world of pre-World War II Intramuros of Old Manila in October 1941, the play explores the many aspects of Philippine high society. The play focuses on family conflict and the amalgamation of old Filipino identity and cultural character with the arrival of contemporary and Western ideals.
