Julia Vargas de Ortigas was a prominent philanthropist. She was particularly involved in the campaign against tuberculosis.

JULIA VARGAS DE ORTIGAS     

In the 1920s the Philippines was beset with the growing disease of tuberculosis. She was called by Manuel Quezon to help needy patients in the recently established Quezon Institute. Ortigas became a member of the Board of Directors of the institution in February 1929. She was later elected as its first vice-president

 

In February 1932 she was elected as president of the Philippine Tuberculosis Society, a positioned she held until her death in 1960.
