
Pope John Paul II served in this position for almost 27 years. He is the only Polish Pope to date, and was the first non-Italian Pope since Dutch Pope Adrian VI in the 1520s.
Pope John Paul II (born Karol Jozef Wojtyta) served as Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church from 16 October 1978 until his death almost 27 years later. His was the second-longest pontificate.
John Paul II has been widely acclaimed as one of the most influential leaders of the twentieth century. He was one of the most-travelled world leaders in history, visiting 129 countries during his pontificate. As part of his special emphasis on the universal call to holiness, he beatified 1,340 people and canonised 483 Saints more than the combined tally of his predecessors during the last five centuries.
At only 58 years of age, he was the youngest pope elected since Pope Pius IX in 1846, who was 54.
The Pope visited the Philippines in 1981 when he beatified the martyr Lorenzo Ruiz and again in 1995.
In September 2000, John Paul II was declared "Blessed" and later declared a saint in April 2014.
