Romero was born in Denver, USA - her father, a Filipino went to the States to pursue his education. In 1937 the family returned to the Philippines. Romero began her acting career at age 16 in the late 1940s and her breakthrough came in 1952 with the films Madame X and her first lead role in Monghita.
Romero achieved stardom for her leading roles in numerous blockbuster films such as Cofradia (1953), Dalagang Ilocana (1954) and Sino ang May Sala? (1956). Romero also ventured television in the late 1980s. In her later years she portrayed matriarch roles.
She has a career spanning more than 70 years with over 250 acting credits and is noted for her sophisticated and demure image.
