Alfredo Obviar was the First Bishop of the Diocese of Lucena. He founded the Missionary Catechists of Saint Therese of the Infant Jesus.

ALFREDO OBVIAR

Bishop Alfredo Obviar saw the need for catechists to teach Christian Doctrine in the public schools within his diocese.  However, many of his volunteers  in the work of evangelism left the ministry for reasons such as  marriage, further studies or better paying jobs.

To address the problem of losing permanent catechists, Bishop Obviar founded the Missionary Catechists of Saint Therese of the Infant Jesus. It was founded in August 1958, in the town of San Narciso, Quezon.
