Lorenzo Tanada was the longest-serving senator in Philippine history, having served from 1947 ending only when Marcos declared martial law in 1972, a period of 24 years.

Tanada served as Solicitor General and was also a long-time opponent of Washington's role in the Philippines. He was the organizer of a number of groups that rallied public opposition to the presence of American troops in Philippines.
