Hilario Davide was the Chief Justice between 1998 and 2005.

HILARIO DAVIDE, JR

As Chief Justice,  Davide was the presiding judge in the impeachment trial against then-President Estrada in December 2000. When the popular protests spilled into the streets, he intervened on behalf of "the welfare and will of the people" by declaring the then Vice-President Gloria Macapagal-Aroyo the constitutional successor and in doing so averted potential violence and military takeover of power, and brought the crisis to an end.
